Ah ha. I’m just reviewing some old irc logs from #geektree… yep, the Geektree had their own irc channel on Undernet. It was originally setup by Lord-Data, our resident technophile, and was pretty widely adopted by my core Geektree group. I think at it’s peak we had at least half of the larger Geektree in there at once. Pretty impressive back then, given how few people used computers for trivial communication like that. Completely different to today… you youngin’s just don’t know how good you’ve got it.
Anyway, the first entry I look at, “Sleazball” is talking. That would be me, in fact. My nickname was original “Sys” (which was short for “System”, which was short for “System Crash”… the movie Hackers had a dangerously large influence on me 🙂 ). But after I stole Sarah from Brian, he made the oft comment at some point that I was a sleazeball. I thought it was hilarious at the time – it was the first time anyone had really called me sleazy, that I knew of… oddly enough I seem to get it a lot, really, which completely befuddles me. But anyway, I felt so amused and privileged to earn the title that I adopted it as my nickname for quite some time.
I think I eventually gravitated slowly back towards Sys… there was a time for a while where we named ourselves after unfortunate STD’s… nothing funnier than seeing “OpsuPup has been killed by syphilis.” in UT. 🙂
These days it’s usually just “Wade”, plain old vanilla me. Although I do like “Someone” on occasion. That arose years later at one of Ugly Ben’s – yes, I’ll explain his name sometime – net nights… all the guys were happily playing, while Sarah & Kim were bored… so they decided to try and plug in the GameCube or whatever console was lying around. Unfortunately, there were no spare power plugs to be found. So they were hassling us guys – specifically me – to get up and organise it for them, but of course we were busy… so I just told them to find the VCR plug and pull that out, since of course we weren’t using that.
So, what do they do? They grab the first power cord they can see in the whole entertainment unit, and yank it firmly, without a care in the world. It was the cord to the main power board for the entire room. Nearly every computer instantly shuts down. Ooooh, you can imagine there were some comments then…. although we were all pretty reasonable about it – it was quite funny. 🙂
Still, Kim got pissed off, as she is wont to do, and came out with “Well if someone had helped us…”… I swear, you could almost see the italics as she spoke. She was referring to me, and the name was instantly adopted once we all got our computers restarted. It’s stuck pretty well over the years… I like it for numerous reasons now… but it also still reminds me of that one night. 🙂
I think that was the first night I met Kim, come to think of it. I was surprised by her – here we were at a net night, and there was this very very attractive girl just sitting there. She was Ben’s interest at that point in time – it was when they were first getting serious together.
As a pointless digression, I still think Kim’s attractive, but very detached.. kinda weird. People – not just me, but most people I know – seem to have a real hard time relating to her or getting close; cynically most people say her sole interest in life is to get close to Ben, an end to which she’ll do pretty much anything by way of means… I don’t like to subscribe to that view myself, because I like to think it’s not true, but – like classical Newtonian mechanics – it does describe and predict the observed behaviour pretty damn accurately.
Anyway, she’s not part of Geektree. Silly diversion. Sorry… we’ll now resume normal programming… 🙂
