My extra brief summer, and the Slide Projector

So today I once more ended up down the beach. Mornington again, too. This time with my grandfather, uncle, Chris and Emily, his sister. It was good to be back there again. The seal was still there, only it had moved down the beach a bit. Luckily, however, it appeared to have departed by the time we left, so hopefully it’s feeling better now and returning to it’s proper life.

It was also interesting to see some of the same people there as yesterday, particularly the teenagers here and there. I guess the beach is the only place to be these days.

All this was rounded off by plenty of time spent in the pool, too. We even watched the Simpsons and Futurama from the pool. Not a bad way to spend an hour or so.

We had a lovely dinner, and then I dragged out the old slide projector. It’s been years – probably a decade or even more – since I’ve seen that pulled out. I used to love it as a kid, looking at all the really old photo’s – like of my grandparent’s wedding, or when my dad was only a few years old. It’s funny how much he looked like he does now, in the face, even at only a few years old. He’s quite clearly himself. Julie, on the other hand, looks almost nothing like she did as a child.

So we all gathered round in the lounge room, looking at dozens of old slides. It’s funny how the predominant theme in all of them was power stations and astronomy. Seeing these again of course solicited numerous comments from Julie about how their childhood holidays consisted of trips to observatories and power stations. :D

There were also photos of their trips to Queensland, Singapore, and more. All in all, it was really cool. And I’m very surprised by both how well the slides have lasted, and their quality. Very crisp, very detailed.

So, that’s more or less my weekend thus far. Pretty cool, really… it’s been a while since I’ve been able to have a real summer weekend… years, it seems. It’s a shame we never really went to the beach much, back in high school. We really let ourselves miss out.
